Karl has been an active freelance trombone (and euphonium) player in the London area. He has played with many groups such as Brassroots (he was a founding member!), Orchestra London, International Symphony Orchestra, Encore, Big Bandemic, and several other “big bands.” After many years of flying a plane “for fun” Karl decided to become a professional pilot. These days Karl is “semi-retired” doing some supply teaching, and also flying jets all over the world.
Seth McNall - Trombone
As a very active freelance trombonist in Southern Ontario, Seth has worked with several orchestras and theatre companies, numerous pop and rock performers, chamber groups as well as his vast jazz experience. Seth is also a director of the London Jazz Festival, chair of the Jazz Association of London Ontario, the musical director of the Thames Valley District School Board’s Honour Jazz Band and vice president of the London Musicians Association.
Stephanie Warrington - Trumpet
Growing up in Port Elgin, Ontario, Stephanie had the great fortune of living in a musical community and attending public schools with robust music programs that ignited her passion for trumpet playing. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Performance and Music Education at Wilfrid Laurier University, followed by her Master's in Music Performance degree from the University of Ottawa. Her primary instructors included Anita McAlister and Karen Donnelly, two prominent female trumpet players on the Canadian music scene. Stephanie is also a proud alumna of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific. Having always been interested in working in a therapeutic field, Stephanie later earned her Master's of Clinical Science degree from Western University and currently works as a school board-based Speech-Language Pathologist in the London area. She continues to enjoy playing trumpet in various ensembles including Brassroots, Encore the Concert Band, and Stratford Symphony Orchestra. At home, Stephanie enjoys downtime with her husband and two boys. She loves to cook, travel, do all kinds of puzzles, and be in nature.
Kevin Swinden - Trumpet
To the extent that it can be said that Kevin grew up, he did so in Toronto, before studying trumpet with Erik Schultz at the University of Western Ontario, where he witnessed first-hand the formation of Brassroots by his upper-year classmates. Kevin went on from Western to complete his Ph.D. in Music Theory at SUNY Buffalo and spent four years at the University of Mississippi before returning to Canada in 2002, where he continues to work as Associate Professor of Music Theory at Wilfrid Laurier University; he served as an Associate Dean of the Faculty of Music from 2011 to 2024. Kevin has played 2nd trumpet in Brassroots since 2008 and is a co-principal trumpet of the Stratford Symphony Orchestra. When not teaching music theory or playing trumpet up and down the 401, Kevin is an avid cook and enjoys his role as a puppy-raiser for service dogs with the Lion’s Foundation Dog Guides of Canada.
Julia Vaughan - Trumpet
Julie is a founding and the longest standing member of Brassroots ... hard to believe given she looks so young! Now a retired elementary school teacher, Julie fills her days with a variety of sporting adventures, volunteering in the community, occasional teaching assignments, and a wide assortment of musical opportunities in Soutwestern Ontario. Although rarely not doing 'something', in her downtime, Julie enjoys spending time with her hubbie, Brad, and enjoys reading a good book!
